Speak Out: How Much Security Should Montgomery County Schools Have?

A school safety meeting is scheduled for Jan. 16.

How much security is the right amount of security for Montgomery County’s public school students? Following the shock of December’s tragic shootings in Newtown, CT, parents and family members of students at Bradley Hills Elementary in Bethesda have written to county leaders asking for security improvements at the elementary school’s temporary location, according to a Wednesday Gazette report. Students and teachers at Bradley Hills currently are housed at the Radnor Center, while the school undergoes modernization, scheduled for completion in August. “Our school has no security system in place and our front door remains unlocked throughout the school day with no mechanism for screening visitors,” parents wrote, according to the report. …

Roaming patrol give's an armed officer the element of suprise, and the intruder the uncertainty of the location of the officer. It's not too much to ask that the one tasked with protecting a school do that by patroling the school. Hope that helps answer your question Joe.   more ›

The Montgomery County Council of PTAs will host a school safety forum later this month.

Police: Masked Man Robs Potomac M&T Bank With Hand Gun

Police are looking for a suspect believed to have committed a Dec. 22 armed robbery.

Police are looking for a masked suspect who robbed the M&T bank in the Cabin John Shopping Center. First District police officers responded to a call from the M&T Bank located at 11325 Seven Locks Road just after 9:20 a.m. on Dec. 22. According to a police report, a male suspect wearing a mask entered the bank, approached a teller showing a small black handgun, and demanded money. He was given an undisclosed amount of cash and fled from the bank. The suspect is described as a male, of unknown race, over six feet tall, with a medium build. If you're getting cozy around a fire in your fireplace or woodstove this holiday season, make sure you know what to do when the fire goes out and it's time to clean up those ashes. The most important thing to remember? Never put ashes in a paper or plastic bag, cardboard box or plastic bucket.  “Embers, often concealed in what appears to be cold ashes, can remain hot enough to rekindle a fire for several days,” said Montgomery County Fire Chief Richard Bowers in a statement released by the county. 'Grandchild Scam' Reported in Friendship Heights

In two scamming incidents, victims transferred $2,000 to a scammer, police said.

The scammers are back in Chevy Chase, and this time, they're pretending to be your grandchildren. Approximately five Friendship Heights residents have been contacted on the telephone since mid-October by someone pretending to be a grandchild and asking for money, according to Montgomery County police. The scammer claims to have been arrested or involved in an accident in Mexico or Canada, asks that money be deposited into a bank account and provides the bank account's number. The scammer also asks that his or her parents are not informed, police reported. In two of the incidents, victims transferred $2,000 to a scammer, police added. Montgomery County Police Urge Residents to 'Shop With a Cop' This Holiday

An increased police presence will provide extra security and pedestrian safety awareness in some of the county's busiest retail centers.

Black Friday shoppers might have noticed an increased police presence in some of the county’s busiest shopping areas. Beginning on Black Friday and running through Dec. 23, the Montgomery County Police Department’s annual “Shop With a Cop” campaign provides extra security in retail areas in all six county police districts. Officers also will distribute 9,000 reusable bright yellow shopping bags, county police Chief J. Thomas Manger said at a news conference on Tuesday in Rockville Town Square. Bethesda-Chevy Chase Crime Stats: Property Crimes Down; Robberies, Assaults Up

More robberies and assaults have been reported YTD in 2012 than this time last year, according to crime statistics provided by the Montgomery County Police Department's second district commander.

More robberies and assaults have been reported in Mongomery County police's second district through the end of September in 2012 than at the same time last year, according to recent crime statistics. However, property crimes—including residential burglaries, car thefts and thefts from vehicles—are on the decline, according to statistics provided by second district Commander Capt. David Falcinelli. The second district includes Bethesda, Chevy Chase and portions of southern Rockville and Kensington. During the first three quarters of 2012, 47 robberies were reported in the second district. That's up 30.6 percent from 36 robberies during the same months in 2011, according to the crime summary. Attempted Robbery Reported in Bethesda-Elm Garage

A man attempted to steal property from a woman in the garage elevator, police said.

A man attempted to rob a woman in the popular Bethesda-Elm garage, a public parking garage near busy Bethesda Row, according to Montgomery County police. The incident happened shortly before 2 p.m. on Nov. 1, according to a recent crime summary provided by Montgomery County police. A woman was riding in the garage's elevator, and when the doors opened, a man unsuccessfully tried to steal property from her, Angela Cruz, county police spokeswoman, said. Police are describing the suspect as a male, between 23 and 28 years old, about 6 feet tall and between 180 and 190 pounds, wearing cornrows and a blue work uniform.  There have been no arrests so far in the case, Cruz said.
