Red Line Single Tracks Between Friendship Heights and Van Ness

Delays expected in both directions.

Update (Friday, March 8, 7 p.m.): Red Line trains resumed two-track operations between Friendship Heights and Van Ness by 4:59 p.m., Metro reported. Customers were advised to expect residual delays for another half an hour. Original post (Friday, March 8, 4:30 p.m.): Red Line trains began single tracking between the Friendship Heights and Van Ness stations on Friday afternoon "due to a broken rail outside Tenleytown Station," according to a Metro statement. Metro Slammed for Poor Veterans Day Red Line Service

The Action Committee for Transit says insufficient Metro service left passengers standing on platforms north of Friendship Heights.

Update, 3 p.m.: Metro spokeswoman Caroline Lukas said that while Metro hasn't yet reviewed the ACT statement, ridership numbers and wait times, she's aware that some riders are displeased wih Monday's level of service. "Some people felt that wait times were longer than what they thought was appropriate for a Monday," Lukas said. However, Lukas said Metro ran service today that's typical for a federal holiday, when ridership normally drops about 20 to 30 percent from regular workday levels. Three-day weekends are important for Metro to complete necessary track work, Lukas said. Red Line: Single Tracking, Special Schedule for Veterans Day

On Monday, Nov. 12, Metro trains will run on a Saturday schedule, and Metrobuses will run on a "Saturday Supplemental" schedule.

Red Line trains will single track this weekend between Grosvenor and Friendship Heights to allow for rail and fastener renewal, as well as for tunnel leak repairs, Metro reported on its website. "Throughout the weekend, trains will operate every 20 minutes between Shady Grove and Glenmont. Between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, additional trains will operate between Friendship Heights and Glenmont, resulting in service an average of every 10 minutes between those stations," Metro added. Metro advised passengers traveling through the work zone to allow about 10 minutes of additional travel time. Metrorail News: Red Line Weekend Track Work

Additional trains will operate between Medical Center and Judiciary Square from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, providing service every 10 minutes between those stations, Metro reported.

  From 10 p.m. on Friday through closing on Sunday, Red Line trains will single-track between Judiciary Square and Rhode Island Avenue for tie renewal work, and between Medical Center and Grosvenor for grout work and rail renewal, according to Metro's website. "Trains will operate every 20 minutes between Glenmont and Shady Grove throughout the weekend. Customers should allow 10 minutes of additional travel time," Metro reported. "Between 9:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, additional trains will operate between Medical Center and Judiciary Square, providing service every 10 minutes between those stations," Metro added. This weekend, Red Line trains will single-track between Takoma and Forest Glen, and between Friendship Heights and Medical Center.

Single-tracking trains return to the Red Line this weekend. Between 10 p.m. on Friday and closing on Sunday, Red Line trains will single-track between Takoma and Forest Glen (to allow for platform reconstruction and fiber-optic cable installation) and between Friendship Heights and Medical Center (to allow for third-rail insulator renewal and rail joint elimination for a safer and smoother ride), Metro reports on its website. Trains will depart from Friendship Heights every 24 minutes this weekend.

Single-tracking on the Red Line will mean more Metro delays this weekend. From 10 p.m. on Friday, May 18, through closing on Sunday, May 20, Red Line trains will single-track between the Van Ness and Friendship Heights Metro stations "to allow for rail and fastener renewal and joint elimination for a smoother ride," according to Metro's website. Single-tracking trains will mean delays on the Red Line this weekend.

Red Line travelers will need to tack on 20 extra minutes to their travel times this weekend, Metro advised on its website. Trains will operate every 24 minutes throughout the weekend (from 10 p.m. on Friday through closing on Sunday) between the Shady Grove and Glenmont stations. Additional trains will run between the Farragut North and New York Avenue stations from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, providing service every 12 minutes in downtown Washington, DC, Metro added. What's Up with the Metro: Weekend of Jan. 6

There will be delays on the Red Line this weekend, due to track work between Friendship Heights and Dupont Circle.

Red Line trains will be single-tracking between the Friendship Heights and Dupont Circle Metro stations this weekend, starting at 10 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, and continuing through closing on Sunday, Jan. 8. Track circuits will be replaced according to National Transportation Safety Board recommendations, "a key step in restoring automatic train operations," according to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. Rails and fasteners will also be renewed, WMATA added.
