Beloved two-year-old creperie has made a mark on the Bethesda dining scene.
Rita Douglass studied philosophy and astronomy in college, but is known best for her crepes. “The cerebral part of me enjoys the intellectual pursuits,” she said. But with her Moroccan parents’ cooking forever pervading her childhood home in Germany, 39-year-old Douglass, who now lives in Annandale, Va., found her destiny away from academics at an early age. “I love serving people,” she said. Douglass opened Rita’s Crepes, a kiosk in downtown Bethesda that serves its specialty hot off the pan, in July 2009. Ten sweet flavors dominate the menu, with toppings such as orange marmalade, maple butter, brown sugar and roasted almonds, plus one savory — the vegetable florentine crepe, filled with mozzarella, tomato, capers, Italian seasoning, …

Owner decides on a “quiet” debut at the former Senor Pepper location.
Surprise. Surprise. The long-awaited Blue 44 opened quietly last week and when this writer popped in briefly last Thursday night…the place was jumping. At around 7:30 p.m., every table was full and the wait staff was bustling around the new classic American cuisine restaurant filling orders. “We decided on a silent opening, with no public announcement,” said Chris Nardelli, the owner. “That way we could gear up slowly and make sure we get everything right.” Blue 44 replaces Senor Pepper at a prime Chevy Chase location right across from Starbucks on Connecticut Avenue in Upper Northwest Washington, D.C. Senor Pepper, a Tex-Mex spot, had been at that location for about three years before closing suddenly near the end of last year. Prior to …

The Tex-Mex restaurant closed around the end of the year.
Following the sudden closure of the only Mexican restaurant in Chevy Chase, Blue 44, a new classic American cuisine eatery, is scheduled to open on Connecticut Avenue next month. Señor Pepper, which billed itself as Tex-Mex, closed suddenly around the end of the year. The former owners posted a sign on the door at 5507 Connecticut Ave., NW, near Livingston Street, about three blocks south of Chevy Chase Circle in Washington, D.C. “The management and staff of Señor Pepper, after having served you for three years, are sorry to have to tell you that we will be moving on,” the notice said. “We thank the entire Chevy Chase community for your support and patronage.” Señor Pepper often was busy on weekends with many customers at outside tables …

Bezu's former executive chef and co-owner is opening his own restaurant in Bethesda in March 2011.
The former co-owner and executive chef of Potomac's Bezu is opening a new restaurant on Elm Street in Bethesda in March 2011 that will serve food made with locally-grown ingredients. After four years as co-owner and executive chef at Bezu — an Asian fusion restaurant in Potomac — Dennis Friedman left the restaurant in October when co-owner, Eddie Benaim bought him out. Friedman wasted no time and pulled together the ingredients for a new restaurant that will be located at 4917 Elm Street in Bethesda. "I have not had a full night's sleep since leaving Bezu in October, but it has been worth it because the stars have truly aligned," Friedman said. The site, which is currently the location of Rock Creek Restaurant, will officially change …
