About 5,000 potholes get filled each year during the month-long event in the District.
Montgomery County commuters driving to and from Washington, DC, during the work week know they face a double whammy in their daily traffic wars—the volume of cars on the road and the varying quality of the road itself. Each spring since 2009, the DC government has kicked off its month-long “Potholepalooza” on Earth Day. It may not be as festive as it sounds, but it might make getting from here to there a bit less bone-jarring. A House bill that would raise the maximum speed limit on interstates and expressways statewide from 65 to 70 mph will be introduced during the current General Assembly session, The Gazette reports.
A House bill co-sponsored by Del. Aruna Miller (D-Dist. 15) of Darnestown and Del. Neil Parrott (R-Dist. 2B) of Hagerstown could force a change in the speed limit on the Intercounty Connector, according to a report by The Gazette. The bill would raise the maximum speed limit on interstates and expressways statewide from 65 to 70 mph, according to the report, and automatically increase the ICC's speed limit from 55 to 70. Miller cited three reasons the change is necessary. “One, the posted speed limit is way too low,” she said, according to the report. “Two, the toll is way too high. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Montgomery and Prince George's counties until 1 p.m. today. The alert calls for a mix of freezing rain, sleet and rain, with possible accumulations of less than one inch of sleet and under a tenth of an inch of ice. Temperatures are expected to stay below freezing, which can cause treacherous road conditions. In a statement released by the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) administrator Melinda B. peters urges motorists to "keep their speeds down as lighter traffic can result in increased travel speeds," and "to exercise extreme caution today." Recovery Act yielded $6.7 million to repave more than 43 miles of seven county roads.
Elected officials on Monday praised the completion of nearly 43 miles of newly repaved commuter routes in Montgomery County thanks to $6.7 million in federal stimulus aid, and said more aid is needed. Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D) of Baltimore congratulated County Executive Isiah Leggett (D) for the county’s completion of the projects, which employed 50 people. “I’m so pleased at what Ike Leggett has done because as we bring federal money to our community, dollars are only as good if they’re well-spent in a well-focused way to solve local problems,” Mikulski said during a news conference just off the fresh pavement of Shady Grove Road at the J. AAA projects more than 34 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles away from
home this weekend.
As families gear up for the official welcome of summer, AAA is projecting that more than 34 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home Memorial Day Weekend. The travel club says the number of travelers increased by more than 500,000 from last year. More people will be on the roads instead of the air this year, according to AAA. More than 30 million people plan to drive to their destination, up 1.2 percent from the 30.3 million whodrove last year. The fresh blacktop of the $2.45 billion Intercounty Connector will open today at 6 a.m. after more than 50 years of debate and four years of construction. The section opening today will allow commuters to drive quickly from I-370 in Montgomery County to I-95 in Prince George's County.
