Salvation Army Seeking Last-Minute Donations

The Salvation Army needs to raise $350,000 before Friday night to meet its initial Red Kettle campaign goal of $1.6 million.

Reports to be released Wednesday are expected to show a $350,000 shortfall in donations for the Salvation Army's Red Kettle campaign, according to Maj. Steve Morris of The Salvation Army National Capital Area Command. The National Capital Area Command, headquartered in Germantown, had a $1.6 million target. Throughout the  campaign, which ran from Nov. 12 to Dec. 24, the organization has reported lower-than-usual donations. As of Dec. 21, the Salvation Army reported a 40 percent decline in donations to the Red Kettle campaign in Montgomery County. Salvation Army Donations Down in Maryland

The organization's annual Red Kettle campaign is under way across Maryland.

As of Dec. 21, the 68 kettles throughout the Greater Baltimore command (Baltimore City and County, Carroll County, Howard County and northern Anne Arundel County) have raised $449,000, which is $25,000 less than this time last year, said Brian Haldeman, a Salvation Army spokesman. Salvation Army Reports Drop in Kettle Donations

The Salvation Army’s National Capital Area Command is reporting an 80 percent decrease in profits from Giant store solicitation, compared to this time last year. Overall profits are down 32 percent.

The Salvation Army's National Capital Area Command is reporting lower than usual profits in the first weeks of their Red Kettle Christmas Campaign. As of Nov. 26, the Salvation Army headquarters in Germantown has reported an 80 percent decrease in profits from collection outside of Giant food stores, and a 32 percent decrease in overall collection. "We remain concerned, but we are very optimistic," said area command major Steve Morris, in a recent statement. "I believe with the help of everyone in the Greater Washington Area, The Salvation Army will reach its goal of 1.6 million dollars." According to communication manager Ken Forsyth, one of the contributing factors to the decrease in profits has been Giant's new solicitation policy, …

Lynda, Thanks for your comment. The National Capital Area Command collected $232,378 during the same time frame last year. So, that was the profit as of Nov. 26 last year. I apologize for not being clear. We will fix this. Thanks again. Frances Correa   more ›
