Koa Sports Awards 3 Scholarship Winners

The Koa Sports Joe Horton Scholarship Fund recently offered three students baseball scholarships.

Joe Horton and his brother Andy successfully completed the 50-mile North Face Endurance Challenge last summer to raise money to establish a sports scholarship fund for unprivileged children, Patch reported. Through the Koa Sports Joe Horton Scholarship Foundation, three students from Washinton, DC, Maryland and Virginia recently were given more than $3,000 in scholarships to help them pursue their passions in baseball. “We couldn’t have planned it any better to get one [each] from DC, Virginia and Maryland, so we are spreading the joy,” Joe Horton said. Slavin Offers Special Scholarship for Leadership Workshop

Town of Somerset high school students are encouraged to apply for the scholarship, which is sponsored by Mayor Jeffrey Slavin.

Somerset high school students looking to develop (or fine-tune) their leadership skills have a unique opportunity this year—the chance to apply for a special scholarship to this summer's Maryland Leadership Workshop. Maryland Leadership Workshops have been held for more than 50 years. This summer's workshop for rising ninth-, 10th-, 11th- and 12th-grade students takes place July 28 through Aug. 3 at Washington College in Chestertown. Tuition is $695 if a student's complete application packet is received before April 1 and $795 if the application packet is received after April 1. One deserving student from the Town of Somerset will get to attend, free-of-charge, thanks to Somerset Mayor Jeffrey Slavin, who is sponsoring a full scholarship. …

3 B-CC Students Receive Posse Scholarships

Twenty-three of the county school system's students—the largest number ever for the system—will receive full-tuition, four-year college scholarships from the Posse Foundation.

More good news on Montgomery County Public Schools: Twenty-three of the county school system's students—the largest number ever for the system—will receive full-tuition, four-year college scholarships from the Posse Foundation, according to a county school system statement. The county school system had 15 Posse Foundation scholarship students last year, the statement added.  "The Posse program identifies public high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential that may have been overlooked by traditional college selection processes," according to the statement. B-CC Student Is Semi-Finalist for National Scholarship

Twenty-two seniors attending the county's public high schools are finalists for the 2013 National Achievement Scholarship competition.

Twenty-two seniors attending Montgomery County's public high schools are semifinalists in the 2013 National Achievement Scholarship competition, including one student—Angela S. White—at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, according to a Montgomery County Public Schools statement. "The scholarship program, administered by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, recognizes academically promising [African-American] students across the nation and awards college scholarships to hundreds of these students each year," according to the statement.
