Montgomery County parents may rest a little easier after the county school board voted Tuesday to speed up spending to increase security at Montgomery County elementary schools. The Montgomery County Board of Education voted unanimously to request an additional $364,000 to place video intercom systems at the entrance of every county elementary school. If the Montgomery County Council approves the request, all 132 elementary campuses could receive the upgrade by July, the Washington Examiner reported. Passage by the County Council is likely. Montgomery County school officials discussed school safety after hearing about a school shooting 55 miles north in Perry Hall.
Montgomery County school officials said Monday they were taking security seriously on the first day of school and in the wake of a shooting at a high school in Perry Hall, MD, that was visited less than a week ago by Education Secretary Arne Duncan. According to Perry Hall Patch, officials say a 15-year-old student shot a 17-year-old student in the back at Perry Hall High School on the first day of school. The debate surrounding school resource officers continues. Montgomery County Council members and the county police chief have suggested a roundtable to address the issue.
What place do police officers have in Montgomery County's public schools? The issue of how to fund school resource officers continues to baffle county officials. The county's schools, police and council all recognize the benefit of the placing officers at local public high schools, but disagree as to its implementation and its scope. Police Chief Thomas Manger in January told the council that adding officers to schools would greatly impact the department's ability to deal with youth crime. With the budget cuts in previous years, only one SROs has been assigned to each police district, although previously the county boasted one officer per school cluster.
