POLL: Are Kids Getting Priced out of Baseball and Softball?

A New York Times article explores the era of the $250 baseball bat.

By Patch Staff Have you bought a baseball glove for your Little Leaguer lately? Did you pay more than $100 for it? How about a $250 bat? A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues" looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," The Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them." B-CC Hires Two New Coaches for Spring Season

Cari Huffman to lead varsity softball team; Marie Cornejo takes over co-ed volleyball

With the spring sports season less than two months away, Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School has filled two head-coaching vacancies, promoting junior varsity softball coach Cari Huffman to the varsity position and hiring Marie Cornejo to lead the co-ed volleyball team. Huffman, who teaches 8th grade history at Benjamin Banneker Middle School, held assistant coaching positions at Quince Orchard and Crossland high schools before spending the last two years leading the Barons' JV squad. A 2003 graduate of Quince Orchard, where she played softball under coach Patty Truitt, Huffman went on to play for two seasons at Montgomery College in Rockville. B-CC Spring Sports Round-Up

B-CC baseball moves ahead to the next round of the playoffs, while the school's softball and girls' and boys' lacrosse teams are out of the playoffs.

The Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School baseball team won the first game of its playoff series, beating Northwest High School's baseball team last Friday with a score of 9-1. B-CC baseball travels to Walt Whitman today to play Whitman's baseball team, the No. 2 seed in the schools' division (the 4A West Region), at 4 p.m. B-CC baseball entered the playoffs as the No. 7 seed in the division. B-CC's softball team lost the first game of its playoff series to Northwest High School last Thursday, 13-0. Going into the game, B-CC's softball team was ranked No. 9 in the division, while Northwest's team was ranked at No. 8. Playoffs Begin for B-CC High School Spring Sports

Girls' and boys' lacrosse teams, the softball team and the baseball team start the playoffs this week.

The playoff games are beginning this week for Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School's spring sports teams. Here's the run-down on the first games: Varsity Girls' Lacrosse: B-CC High School will play Walt Whitman High School in the first round of the playoffs on Thursday, May 12, at 5:15 p.m. at Walt Whitman High School. Varsity Boys' Lacrosse: B-CC High School will play Springbrook High School in the first round of the playoffs on Thursday, May 12, at 7 p.m. at B-CC High School.  Softball: B-CC High School will play Northwest High School in the first round of the playoffs on Thursday, May 12, at 4 p.m. at Northwest High School.
