The accolades keep coming in for the Town of Somerset's new pool house.
The new pool house in the Town of Somerset is barely more than a year old, and it's already garnered a couple of awards. Most recently, pool house architects McInturff Architects received a 2012 Honor Award in design excellence from the American Institute of Architects, Potomac Valley Chapter, for the firm's pool house design, the December issue of the Somerset Town Journal reported. The award "was based on a decision made by jurors based in North Carolina," the Journal reported. "Proportionally this is very elegant. ... It has wonderful interiors. ... This was a significant transformation of the original facility. ... A very smart project. ... This is an example of how it requires more skill to do small projects," the jurors' comments …

Former Town of Somerset Council Member Alan Proctor was honored for his leadership in overseeing the renovations to the town pool and the construction of the town's new award-winning pool house.
Town of Somerset council members and residents honored former Council Member Alan Proctor Wednesday, Oct. 31, for his dedication to the town—in particular, for his leadership in overseeing the renovations to the town pool and the construction of the town's new pool house. Proctor and his wife Anne—both two-term veterans of the Town of Somerset Council—flew in from California to attend the dedication of a bench—at the entrance to the Somerset Town Pool's parking lot in Alan Proctor's honor. Alan Proctor was the pool project's main overseer, and worked with architects and construction engineers to complete the project. The pool house, which functions as a community gathering spot during the warmer months of the year, ecently won an …

The new pool house received an Excellence in Design Honor Award from the Maryland Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the Somerset Town Journal reported.
The Town of Somerset's new pool house—which opened last year after renovations to the original pool and pool house—isn't known just locally for its beautiful design. It's getting good reviews from Maryland Chapter of the American Institute of Architects as well. Last month, McInturff Architects, the pool house's designers, "reported that the Somerset Pool House was awarded an Excellence in Design Honor Award from the Maryland Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA)," Town of Somerset Council Member Marnie Shaul reported in the October issue of the Somerset Town Journal. Shaul added that comments from the design jury included: New materials, carefully composed on the existing footprint, render the small pool house an elegant …

A motion to add movable glass "nana" walls to enclose the pavilion of the new Somerset pool house failed to pass in Tuesday's council meeting.
No glass “nana” walls will be enclosing the open-air pool house pavilion of the recently renovated Somerset Town Pool any time soon. A motion to approve the construction of floor-to-ceiling movable glass walls to enclose the pool house pavilion for use in colder weather failed to pass in the Town of Somerset Council on Tuesday night. The motion did not receive approval from a majority of the council members, Mayor Jeffrey Slavin said. The addition of the nana walls would have cost about $160,000, said council member Alan Proctor, who voted in favor of the glass walls. “[The nana walls are] the final … element to project” of renovating the town pool. Adding the walls would “expand the value of the investment” made by the town for the new …

At a Monday night meeting, the Town of Somerset Pool Committee discussed ways to discourage people from hopping over the pool fence during the pool's off-hours and how to keep glass out of the pool area.
The recently renovated Somerset Town Pool is so popular that people are hopping over fences to get in. The pool is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day except Saturdays, when the pool’s hours are 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Pool members get in free, while guests pay a modest $2 entry fee. Still, people are climbing over the fence to get in after-hours. A video camera that monitors the pool 24 hours a day did capture the most recent pool hoppers, but their identities could not be recognized on the tape, said Barbara Condos, head of the Pool Committee, at the committee’s meeting on Monday night. It’s not clear exactly why the pool hoppers are so eager to get into the pool area—on one break-in, pool hoppers shredded all of the toilet paper in the …

Just the parking lot paving and the proper inspections stand between the residents and the pool's opening day.
For the most part, what stands between Somerset residents and their Town Pool is new asphalt and a final inspection. Town officials hope that the pool will be ready for opening day this Saturday, but if it rains too much between now and then, the construction crew will not be able to lay the new asphalt over the parking lot, which is currently too hazardous to pass inspection. Laying asphalt in wet conditions would seal moisture into the surface of the parking lot. When that moisture freezes in the winter, it would crack through to the surface of the asphalt. But, the paving can be done all in one day, said Town Council members Cathy Pickar and Marnie Shaul, vice president for the council, at a special council meeting on Monday night. …
