Many see the proposed hiker-biker path for the east side of Wisconsin Avenue as a pointless project requiring the loss of too many trees. Others see it as a way to increase connectivity between Friendship Heights and Bethesda.
The 8-foot-wide paved path proposed for the east side of Wisconsin Avenue between Friendship Heights and Bethesda elicited both cheers and jeers from a standing-room-only audience that packed the Town of Somerset Town Hall on Monday night. The audience had gathered to hear Maryland State Highway Administration officials and Montgomery County Council Member Roger Berliner speak about the project, which is intended to be a shared-use, hiker-biker path along the so-called Wisconsin Avenue 'Green Mile,' much of which runs alongside the Chevy Chase Club. The path was proposed by some Chevy Chase residents, including some from Chevy Chase Village, many years ago, and has been in the county's master plan for some time. As Wisconsin Avenue is a …

Icy conditions could occur at the onset of the morning rush hour.
The Maryland State Highway Administration strongly urges motorists to avoid traveling early Thursday morning, especially before dawn. "Stay off the roads early [Thursday] morning, so that SHA crews have the opportunity to proactively treat roadways before morning rush hour," SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters said in a news release. "When you step out and see ice on your doorstep, you can assume that roads will be icy as well. Also remember that conditions can change rapidly within just a few miles, and we ask motorists to remain on guard and exercise extreme caution tonight and tomorrow morning." The SHA warns that those traveling during inclement weather and poor conditions pose a threat to themselves, first responders and other drivers…

An ICC-related project by the State Highway Administration will improve the access of migratory fish to local, historic spawning grounds.
Migratory fish using Rock Creek to gain access to historic spawning grounds should encounter an improved Rock Creek fish passage through Meadowbrook Local Park by next spring. The Maryland State Highway Administration is restoring about 1,200 linear feet of stream in Meadowbrook Local Park so that the fish will have a smoother swim to their spawning grounds. The project will eliminate barriers to fish migration caused by sharp drops in the streambed due to erosion and three exposed pipe encasements, according to a press release. The State Highway Administration is using boulders and native plantings to elimination future erosion of the streambed. The project is just one of several mitigation and environmental enhancement projects on which …

Temperatures remain near the freezing mark.
State Highway Administration officials and Montgomery County Department of Transportation crews continue to salt and sand the roads in and around Chevy Chase. No incidents have been reported and temperatures have been hovering above freezing, according to State Highway Administration spokesperson, Charlie Gischlar. Views from traffic cameras along I-495 at Connecticut Avenue and River Road show traffic moving as usual. Still, motorists are cautioned about slowing down in icy weather. Pavement conditions remain very slick and icy especially in neighborhoods, according to the Montgomery County website. DOT crews will continue to treat all major roads, including emergency and secondary routes, followed by neighborhood streets in …

The trail sounds good on first impression; however, those of us who use the existing Capital Crescent Trail know first-hand that there are serious safety issues with having bicycles and pedestrians combined in the same physical space. Many of us have been nearly knocked down by (mostly young male) bicycle riders whizzing past us at high speed, giving no audible warning, and leaving only inches …   more ›
