Rep. Steny Hoyer Thanks At-Risk Maryland Postal Workers in Ricin Case

Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-MD, calls Maryland postal workers selfless for the risks they sometimes face in national letter threats.

Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-MD, (Dist. 5) Wednesday thanked Maryland postal workers, some of whom may face increased risk in cases of dangerous substances being mailed in threats against Washington officials. Federal investigators searched a mail sorting facility in Prince George's County Tuesday night for clues to the origins of a ricin-laced letter sent to Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker, according to The Washington Post. The U.S. Senate's mail sorting operation is located at 6330 Columbia Park Road in Landover. An FBI spokesperson would not divulge the location of the bureau's investigation, but several outlets published images of hazmat trucks parked outside of the Landover facility on Tuesday. Delaney Bests Bartlett as Other Incumbents Coast to Re-Election in Maryland

Maryland proved overwhelmingly "blue" in voting at the federal level.

Capital News Service Democrat John Delaney ended Rep. Roscoe Bartlett’s 10-term reign in the U.S. House of Representatives on an election night that otherwise featured no surprises among Maryland’s federal races. Bartlett, the 86-year-old Buckeystown resident who has represented Maryland’s 6th Congressional District since 1993, fell to 38.1 percent in vote totals Wednesday. Delaney captured 58.6 percent, with Libertarian candidate Nickolaus Mueller taking 3.2 percent. “It has been my great honor to serve the constituents of the 6th District of Maryland for the past 20 years,” Bartlett said in a statement. “Although the election did not have the outcome we had hoped for, we can hold our heads high knowing that we have fought for the …

'Paper Apple Campaign' Hopes to Sway Pols Against Food Stamp Cuts

Farm Bill impasse includes cuts that could leave 3 million Americans without food-assistance benefits.

A coalition of anti-hunger advocates from across Maryland is trying to show the state’s congressional representatives just how important food assistance programs are. Maryland Hunger Solutions, an advocacy arm of the nonprofit Food Research and Action Center, is heading a “Paper Apple Campaign” this week to urge U.S. Reps. Steny Hoyer, D-Mechanicsville, and Chris Van Hollen, D-Kensington, to push back against cuts proposed in the 2012 Farm Bill that advocates fear would cripple food-assistance programs that serve millions of Americans. More than 700,000 Marylanders rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (formerly known as the federal food stamp program) to help meet their nutritional needs, according to MHS. This summer’s …
