Save the Date: ImagiFest 2012

Bethesda's Imagination Stage will open its doors to kids and families.

Parents, save the date: Imagination Stage’s ImagiFest 2012 is set for Sept. 8. The downtown Bethesda professional children’s theater will open its doors during the free event, dubbed “Suess on the Loose.” Kids and their families will be lead on an interactive journey through the building, featuring scenic installations of productions in the theater’s 2012-2013 season. The catch? The Cat in the Hat has tricked all the characters into thinking they’re in a Dr. Suess tale, and kids will be tasked with saving the stories. ImagiFest will also feature a dance party, a DIY chalk graffiti wall, show previews, backstage access and sample classes in theater, music and dance. Families can get a sneak peek of performances of Mouse on the Move, an …

Adventure Theatre In Glen Echo Park Partners With Musical Theater Center

Theater merger strengthens business, gives young performers more opportunities

Adventure Theatre in Glen Echo Park joined forces with the performance training expertise of Rockville's Musical Theater Center in March to form Adventure Theatre MTC. The new company has a stronger business model and can offer more opportunities for young actors, such as casting children rather than adults in the roles of Christopher Robin in Winnie the Pooh and Mary and Laura Ingalls in Little House on the Prairie Christmas, said the producing artistic director for Adventure Theatre MTC, Michael Bobbitt. A professional theater will give young actors-in-training a reason to “step up their game” with the prospect of making it on the big stage, and the revenue from the Musical Theater Center’s training programs will help offset the low-cost…

Play In A Day Set For Feb. 11

Professional acting troupes will write, rehearse and perform a ten-minute play -- all in 24 hours.

Talk about quick thinking. Six professional acting troupes from the Washington, D.C. region are set to write, rehearse, and perform an original play in 24 hours during the annual "Play in a Day" festival. And lucky for Bethesda residents, it's all happening right in our backyard. The eighth annual festival, produduced by the Bethesda Urban Partnership and Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District, is set for 8 p.m. Saturday Feb. 11, at Imagination Stage in downtown Bethesda. That's when the curtain will rise, anyway -- the craziness starts the Friday before, when playwrights and directors are assigned themes for their ten-minute masterpieces. The acting troupes participating this year hail from Adventure Theatre in Glen Echo, Flying V in …

Chevy Chase Storyteller Turns Family History into Engaging Tale

Ellouise Schoettler will perform "Finding Gus"—a one-woman, one-hour performance bringing family genealogy to life—at the Friendship Heights Village Center on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at 7:30 p.m.

When Ellouise Schoettler started researching her family's history two decades ago, she had no idea her research would turn into a performance. “I was finding really interesting … things about my family,” said Schoettler, a Chevy Chase artist and storyteller originally from North Carolina. But when she tried to tell her children what she had found out about their great grandfather, they weren’t interested—they were polite, but bored. When Schoettler stumbled across a storytelling event in Washington, DC, though, something clicked. “You have to make [an audience] interested” in a story to make them stick around, she realized. “You have to bring those characters alive,” by acting out how they might have lived and how they might have looked …
