Set Bait, Catch Thief

Chevy Chase Village tries a new tactic to combat its rising theft rate: a bait car.

Thieves accustomed to stopping by Chevy Chase Village for a few easy laptops and GPS units may want to rethink their strategies. With the village's new bait car program, they're much more likely to be caught. The new program was suggested by Chevy Chase Village Police Chief John Fitzgerald as a way to combat the village's rising theft rate. Vehicles Stolen, Uptick in Thefts from Autos in 2nd District

Montgomery County Police reported 40 incidents involving 45 vehicles since June 1.

Montgomery County police are reporting an uptick in thefts from autos in Bethesda and Chevy Chase neighborhoods in recent weeks. Two recent car thefts have also highlighted the need for residents to lock their vehicles, police said. According to police, 40 incidents involving 45 vehicles have been reported since June 1 in neighborhoods south of River Road between Goldsboro Road and Little Falls Parkway. All the thefts happened at night, and items were stolen from unlocked vehicles, police reported. In the early morning hours of June 11, according to police, a homeowner noticed three men wearing black clothing looking into cars with flashlights along Bryn Mawr Avenue. if they would spend the money and get fingerprints you would catch them. I had an entire handprint on a freshliy cleaned car window and a probable suspect and the officer said that they don't have the money to take fingerprints. So when he steals your stuff you can blame it on the idiots that will not do any REAL police work.   more ›
