Tornado Watch Issued for Montgomery County Friday Afternoon

Tornadoes can form from severe thunderstorms with little or no advanced warning.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for Montgomery County at 2:30 p.m. Friday, according to a Montgomery County email alert. The alert is in effect until 10 p.m. "Tornadoes can form from severe thunderstorms with little or no advanced warning. Know your safe room in your home, at school and at work. Do not use highway overpasses as shelters. Remain alert for the issuance of warnings," the email alert advised. The alert applies to these counties: Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Caroline, Carroll, Cecil, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Kent, Montgomery, Prince George’s, Queen Anne’s, St. Mary’s, Talbot, and Washington. Tornado Watch Issued for Montgomery County Wednesday Night

The National Weather Service stated that the tornado watch would be effective until 2 a.m. on Jan. 31.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for Montgomery County shortly before 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 30. The NWS stated that the tornado watch would be effective until 2 a.m. on Jan. 31. "Tornadoes can form from severe thunderstorms with little or no advanced warning," according to a county email alert. "Know your safe room in your home, at school and at work. Do not use highway overpasses as shelters. Remain alert for the issuance of warnings," the email alert continued. Weather forecasters predicted unusual weather for Wednesday night in Montgomery County. UPDATE: Severe Storms Expected for D.C. Region

Friday commuters may contend with heavy rain and strong winds on their way home.

Update, 1:55 p.m. A tornado watch has been issued for Montgomery County, the District of Columbia, and neighboring counties until 9 p.m. Friday. See the NOAA alert for more details about which counties are included in the tornado watch. Original story: Commuters may find themselves driving home in bad weather this evening. The National Weather Service is warning of severe thunderstorms likely to develop this afternoon and evening, with heavy rain and strong winds. Severe Tornado Watch for Montgomery County

Tornado watch in effect until 8 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Montgomery County. The watch is effective until 8 p.m.   "Atmospheric conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms and tornadic development" this afternoon and evening, according to the National Weather Service.

Good point! I guess I meant that the watch is severe rather than the tornado possibilities. Or, rather, that's probably what the National Weather Service meant - the probability that a tornado will occur is probably greater for a severe watch than for a non-severe watch. But that's just my guess - I'll check on that for you with a weather person. -Laura   more ›
