As the Town of Chevy Chase Council considers how to deal with its surplus of approximately $8 million or $9 million, one concrete idea has been put forward: the elimination of the property tax for fiscal year 2013-2014. Councilwoman Linna Barnes proposed eliminating the tax, and the council will vote on the matter on May 8. "It’s exciting that our revenues have been so solid for the last two years that we can eliminate the property tax," Barnes said. The property tax has been in the range of $100 and $120 per $1 million of assessed real property for the past year, Barnes added. A few years ago when revenues in the town were up, Barnes—who has been a council member for ten years—moved to reduce the property tax, and it subsequently was …

Council encourages resident feedback on plan to encourage canopy tree planting and clarify its tree policies.
The Town of Chevy Chase’s trees bring the community a variety of colors in the fall and spring, and shade during the hot and humid summers. If not maintained, these trees also have the potential to cause power outages that could take days to fix, as the area experienced after June’s derecho storm left homes without power for several days. To educate the public about the town’s efforts to maintain older trees while preventing another prolonged power outage, the town held a meeting on Oct. 24 to discuss the its policies and practices regarding the care of its trees. The town’s 10-year plan, established in 2006, calls for expanding its tree canopy through enforcing the town’s ordinances and encouraging residents to plant trees on their …
