Santa continues a 32-year-old tradition this season as he joins with the Cabin John Volunteer Fire Department to visit children of all ages around Bethesda, Cabin John and Potomac. Accompanied by firefighter-elves, Santa will make his way through several communities collecting toys for the National Center for Children and Families in Bethesda, and the United States Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. Atop a decked out fire truck, Santa and the firefighters will traverse various areas nightly from 6 to 9 through Dec. 21. This week's schedule includes Arrowood, Seven Locks Hills, Congressional Manor, Carderock Springs, The Palisads, Avenel, Congressional Country Club Estates and Cabin John. In 1947, Diane Hendricks made a doll and asked her husband, Maj. Bill Hendricks, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, to find a local charity in the Los Angeles area that would give it to a needy child. When he was unable to locate one, she suggested that he start one. That year, Maj. Hendricks teamed with other Marine reservists, collecting and distributing 5,000 toys to children that year. In 1948, the Marine Corps adopted the Toys for Tots program and it has been running steadily since, with the help of celebrities such as Bob Hope, Kenny Rodgers and First Lady Michelle Obama. Riderwood retirement community residents and staff, as well as prospective residents, delivered more than 1,000 donated toys to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation to help disadvantaged children in the greater Washington, DC, area have a happy holiday. The delivery was made at Friendship Heights' Mazza Gallerie on Friday, Dec. 16. Nine large boxes filled with toys—including stuffed animals, art materials, dolls, games, matchbox cars and coloring books—were delivered by residents and staff sporting Santa hats. The Mazza Gallerie drop-off location was coordinated by WRQX (MIX 107.3 FM). Riderwood resident Terrie Elliott was interviewed by the radio station for a drive-time, on-site newscast.
