#MoCo Online: What Montgomery County Is Doing with Social Media

County government disseminates information via social media. Patch brings it to you.

The Montgomery County government has gotten with the times. Elected officials and county offices are using Twitter and Facebook to communicate. That's a smart strategy, as that's where residents spend much of their time online. Patch will look to find interesting information posted via social media and share it with you. Today, we'll start with the county's page, which lists the Twitter accounts for County Council members, county government departments and other agencies. You can choose whom you'd like to follow on Twitter, or you can monitor the whole list with a list at this link.

Maryland Education Department Makes Twitter Debut

The Maryland State Department of Education is the latest state agency to jump on the Twitter train, and just in time for the back-to-school season. The @MdPublicSchools account launched Aug. 10, reminding followers of Maryland's tax-free shopping week and other notes about back-to-school preparations across the state. "Our goal is to reach parents, teachers, and the public wherever they are, in whatever format they are most comfortable with," said William Reinhard, spokesperson for MSDE. "We began our Facebook page last year with the same thing in mind. The alert went to Montgomery County Police’s 2,398 Twitter followers Thursday afternoon—its importance amplified by the all-caps display, BREAKING NEWS. “… MCP Arrests Cat Burglar #catburglar” Here’s your cat burglar, folks: Perry Jane, the feline companion of Montgomery County Police Officer Janelle Smith, a police spokeswoman. “We just call her Jane,” said Smith’s colleague, Officer Rebecca Inocenti, who helped set up the photo Thursday. Obamacare: Montgomery County Reacts To Twitter Confusion

The county reacts on social media after initial reports botched the Supreme Court Ruling on "Obamacare."

The Twitter nation waited and watched for the Supreme Court ruling on President Obama's healthcare act Thursday morning. Seconds after the ruling was released, the social media outlet exploded in confusion. Early reports from CNN said the Affordable Care Act had been struck down, the Associated Press reported that the law had been upheld, some claimed it was too early to have a correct analysis.
