Martin's Additions Holds Manna Food Drive on MLK Day

The food drive is an annual tradition for the Village of Martin's Additions.

By Dick and Linda Kirschten Monday, Jan. 21, is Inauguration Day as well as the Martin Luther King Day of National Service. As it has for the last several years, the Village of Martin's Additions will be collecting shelf-stable food for Montgomery County's Manna Food Center. You'll find a donation table staffed by volunteers in front of the Brookville Supermarket (7027 Brookville Rd., Chevy Chase) on Monday. So, if you don't have time to volunteer your services to another cause, this provides an easy way to give back to the community. Cash donations also will be accepted and will be converted into non-perishable supplies for Manna within the week. Hope to see you there!

Olympia Coffee Shop: New Owner, Same Menu

There's a change in ownership at the popular Olympia Coffee Shop in the Village of Martin's Additions, Chevy Chase, but not too much else will change.

Popular neighborhood eatery Olympia Coffee Shop (7021 Brookville Rd., Chevy Chase), has a new owner, but nothing else is slated to change—at least for the time being. New owner Grace Kim told Patch that the menu might change slightly, but not much.  On Wednesday afternoon, after the mid-day lunch rush, the restaurant was still busy, and Kim stood behind the counter making sandwiches for the restaurant's patrons. Olympia Coffee Shop, located in the heart of the Brookville Road shopping block in the Village of Martin's Additions, specializes in standard fare like grilled cheese, tuna and BLT sandwiches, as well as fries, roast chicken dinners, breakfast items and Korean specialities. Former owner Ann Yi had owned and operated the shop since …

Martin's Additions Hosts Manna Food Drive

Saturday is the last day of Montgomery County's Community Service Week.

By Dick and Linda Kirschten Saturday, Oct. 27, is the culmination of Montgomery County’s Community Service Week, an effort to get residents involved in an array of volunteer activities—economic, social, environmental and so on. If your busy schedule hasn’t given you and your family time to take part in any of the planned events, there’s still an opportunity to give back. On Saturday, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Village of Martin’s Additions will conduct a food drive, the proceeds of which will go to Manna Food Center, the county’s central food bank. Through its regular distribution program, Manna provides supplementary food to nearly 3,300 families each month at 14 locations throughout Montgomery County, as well as to institutions …

In August Doldrums, Don't Forget to Help the Hungry

Donations to food banks tend to taper off in the summer, when people go away on vacation. But, hunger doesn't know the difference.

By Linda and Dick Kirschten, project coordinators for the Martin's Additions Food Project  Typically, donations to food banks spike in the late fall/early winter, when the holiday season starts in full swing, and—unfortunately—they taper off during the summer, when many folks are away on vacation. But, as the Village of Martin’s Additions in Chevy Chase likes to remind us, “hunger knows no season.” In fact, as The Washington Post reported in late July, the Washington, DC, metropolitan region faces "a growing hunger crisis," as many middle-class families that have never needed emergency assistance now "find themselves at food pantries" seeking supplemental supplies, Lynn Brantley, president and chief executive of the Capital Area Food Bank…

Why Did the Chicken Cross Brookville Road?

Chevy Chase has its fair share of unusual animals: a fox, a coyote and now a chicken.

As if foxes and coyotes weren't enough, Chevy Chase now has a chicken on the loose. A Chevy Chase resident and her daughter recently spotted a white chicken (or possibly hen) cross Brookville Road in the direction of Connecticut Avenue, near Underwood Street, Village Manager Jean Sperling reported to Patch. Montgomery County law does not allow chickens within 100 feet of a residence, Chevy Chase Village Section 3 Manager Andy Leon Harney told Patch. With Chevy Chase homes located very closely together, the possibilities as to where the bold fowl's coop might be are somewhat limited. And why was the chicken crossing Brookville Road in the first place? Was it not a fan of La Ferme's roasted chicken with black truffle and goat cheese dish? …

Coyote Sighting in Martin's Additions, Chevy Chase

A coyote was recently spotted in the Village of Martin's Additions.

Fireworks aren't the only reason to keep a close eye on your pets these days. A coyote was recently spotted in Chevy Chase, in a park (often known as Shepherd Street Park) at the end of Turner Lane in the Village of Martin's Additions, reported Martin's Additions resident Tom Van Vechten. The coyote appeared to be a full-grown and healthy-looking adult, Van Vechten wrote in a notice sent to the village office for circulation among village residents. Get daily and breaking news updates in Chevy Chase by signing up for newsletters here. Coyotes "are generally nocturnal and seldom seen. Helping Neighbors in Need

With a still-stuttering economy, many Montgomery County residents remain at risk for going hungry. You can help make a difference!

By Dick and Linda Kirschten Want to contribute to the community but feel too pressed for time? Here’s an easy solution. Now in its fourth full year, the Village of Martin’s Additions Food Drive collects nonperishable items, and—twice each month—delivers them to the Manna Food Center, which serves the entirety of Montgomery County. There’s a handy donation box downstairs from the village office at 7013-B Brookville Rd., in the heart of the small commercial area. So, on your next shopping trip, pick up a few extra cans or boxes of food and drop them in the box on your way up or down Brookville. With a still-stuttering economy, many Montgomery County residents remain at risk for going hungry. And, you can help make a difference!
