The first-round series between the Capitals and the New York Rangers has folks talking.

The Washington Capitals took care of business at home, but lost to the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Monday, narrowing their lead to 2-1 in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinal series. The series has Montgomery County residents who love to "rock the red" tweeting. @score429 tweeted: The Rangers-Caps series is the best of the 1st round.Tough, two-way hockey. The team that wins will be tough to beat in the East. #nyr #caps @moneymetalcakes of Olney encouraged fans to grow a playoff beard like the players: "Join me, grow a playoff beard at http://po.st/TLWWBR . Metro to Stay Open Late for Capitals Playoff Games

Metrorail to go to OT if Caps do.

Metrorail, which has a station near Verizon Center (Gallery Place/Chinatown), will stay open an hour later if any Washington Capitals hockey playoff games run late or go into overtime, according to The Washington Post. The Capitals open their quest for the Stanley Cup against the New York Rangers on at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Last year, Game 3 of the Capitals’ playoff series against the Rangers went to triple overtime, ending well after midnight—when Metro typically closes on weekdays. The Post reports that an announcement will be made inside the Verizon Center by 11 p.m. Metro riders will be able to exit the transit system at any station, but will only be able to enter at Gallery Place (all entrances), Judiciary Square (only on F Street) and …

St. Pat's Parade and a Caps Shoutout for Ledecky's 16th

Bethesda's teen Olympic gold medalist celebrated her birthday in style this weekend.

She swam to a stunning gold medal victory in the women's 800 meter freestyle last summer during the London Olympics -- finishing in eight minutes and 14.63 seconds, breaking a 23-year-old American record and missing a world record by a shave. That's a lot to accomplish before your 16th birthday. Bethesda's hometown swimming phenom Katie Ledecky celebrated her birthday in style this weekend, first as a division marshal in the St. Pat's parade, and then with a special honor from the Washington Capitals. Ledecky rode a classic car through the streets of Washington, DC during the 42nd annual St. Patrick's Day parade Sunday afternoon. Later, during a Washington Capitals game, NHL Hall of Famer and Capitals legend Rod Langway presented Ledecky …

Sports Fans, Tourists, Track Work Could Mean Major Metro Delays

Transit group: Postpone scheduled track work on Saturday.

Transit advocates are calling on Metro to postpone track maintenance scheduled for Saturday when Metrorail is expected to see an influx of riders to big games for Washington’s hockey and baseball teams. With the weather warming up, Saturday also is expected to be a busy day for tourists using the transit system to visit Washington. “With trains running only once every 24 minutes on most of the Red Line, and four stations shut on the Green Line, the system will not be able to meet the need for its services,” Action Committee for Transit President Tina Slater wrote in a letter sent Tuesday night to Metro General Manager Richard Sarles. The track work and two home games for DC sports teams could make the Saturday midday ride a long one for …

The Soapbox: The Caps Advance

Economic figures show the economy is slowing. And a judge refuses to drop all charges against Manning.

An overtime goal propels the Capitals into the next round in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Economic figures show the recovery might be losing steam. And the soldier in the middle of the Wikileaks scandal is still in court.   The Washington Capitals knocked off the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals, on an overtime shot that sparked racist comments on Twitter. The Caps now face the Rangers on Wednesday. Will the Caps need all seven games against New York?   The U.S. economy grew at a slower pace than forecast, according to data published Friday by Bloomberg. The first quarter gross domestic product grew at an annual rate of 2.2 percent. In the fourth quarter of 2011, the GDP grew at 3 percent. The numbers give the …

County Product Halpern Returns for the Capitals

Born in Potomac, raised in Rockville, former captain Jeff Halpern is a Washington veteran.

The Washington Capitals, preparing for last week's season opener against Carolina, ended practice on Wednesday, Oct. 5, with some spirited sprints at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in Arlington, Va. Head coach Bruce Boudreau and several players pounded their sticks on the ice to encourage teammates at the end of the more than 90-minute practice. “We were shaking our heads with what was going on. Those are pretty difficult [workouts],” Washington center Jeff Halpern said with a smile as he sat by his locker after practice. “You want to stay in game condition.” Halpern, 35, is a Montgomery County success story. Born in Potomac, he grew up in Rockville and began playing organized hockey when he was about 3. As a young boy he played on the rinks…
