Chevy Chase Crime: Theft at Whole Foods, Graffiti at Rock Creek Forest E.S.

A suspect removed property from an unknowing victim at Whole Foods Market in Friendship Heights at about 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9.

The following information was supplied by the Montgomery County Police Department in its summary of major crimes occurring in the county between Jan. 7 and 15. The mention of an arrest or charge does not indicate a conviction. A theft occurred at Whole Foods Market (4420 Willard Ave., Chevy Chase) on Wednesday, Jan. 9, at about 1 p.m. A suspect removed property from an unknowing victim. The Whole Foods Market in Friendship Heights has been the setting of a crime incident in the recent past: A pickpocketing incident occurred at the store on Sunday, Nov. 4. How Would Proposed Hike in Maryland's Minimum Wage Affect Local Businesses?

As reported by Germantown Patch on Tuesday, a Maryland lawmaker is introducing legislation seeking to raise the state's minimum wage from its current rate of $7.25 per hour to $10.00 per hour by 2015. When the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, often called Obamacare, was passed by Congress, a number of business leaders, including Papa John's CEO John Schnatter expressed concerns over the negative financial effect the law would have on business. Curt Grimm, professor at Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland College Park, said that he expects there to be a "big outcry from the business community—they have to protect their own interests" but is not sure it will rise to the level of resistance to Obamacare. …

From Gingerbread Houses to a Habitat for Humanity

Children got a chance to participate in a construction site for Habitat for Humanity last Saturday—but with gingerbread for drywall and candy roof tiles.

Sometimes, drywall is just a little too heavy. That's when walls of gingerbread come in handy. Children (of all ages) were invited last Saturday to make and decorate gingerbread houses at Bloomingdale's (at the Shops at Wisconsin Place, in Chevy Chase) as part of a fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, MD. During the afternoon, Bloomingdale's shoppers could take their receipts to the Habitat for Humanity desk set up in the store, and have the store donate 10 percent of the value of their purchases to Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, MD. The results are in! Chevy Chase Patch's first "Rivals" contest featured six coffee shops in Chevy Chase, and asked readers to write reviews of their favorite ones.
