Potomac Phil Returns for DC's Second Annual Groundhog Day Event

Potomac Phil will once again participate in a Groundhog Day event in Dupont Circle.

For the second year in a row, Potomac Phil, the taxidermied D.C. relative of Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil, will make an appearance on Groundhog Day to predict spring's arrival. Fittingly, Potomac Phil also has a penchant for political predictions. This year's event will begin at 7:30 a.m. Feb. 2 at the fountain in Dupont Circle. Phil will make his appearance at 8 a.m. According to the event website: "Potomac Phil, the National Groundhog, will make an appearance and offer weather and political predictions. Phil will let us know whether to expect six more weeks of winter or an early spring. Live accordion music, polka dancers, local celebrities, VIPs and school children will participate." Last year was the first ever Groundhog Day …

While there may not be any snow around here, local ski resorts have plenty of powder ready for the shushing.

Except for the past few days, the weather in the area has been so mild that many people have continued to enjoy warmer weather leisure activities. But with the biting cold, thoughts are turning to shushing down the slopes of powdery snow. There are 20 ski resorts within a four-hour drive of Washington, DC, with activities ranging from traditional skiing to snowboarding, tubing, sledding and much more. The DCSki website lists Carroll Valley, PA's Liberty Mountain as the closest ski spot, just a 1-hour, 35-minute drive from the nation's capital. Liberty offers 16 trails, eight chairlifts and 14 snow tubing lanes to handle 13,400 skiers per hour. Mercersburg, PA's Whitetail Resort is only 10 minutes farther away, and it recently celebrated …

How to Safely Dispose of Fireplace Ashes

Burning a Yule log this holiday season? Here are some tips for safely cleaning out your fireplace or woodstove.

If you're getting cozy around a fire in your fireplace or woodstove this holiday season, make sure you know what to do when the fire goes out and it's time to clean up those ashes. The most important thing to remember? Never put ashes in a paper or plastic bag, cardboard box or plastic bucket.  “Embers, often concealed in what appears to be cold ashes, can remain hot enough to rekindle a fire for several days,” said Montgomery County Fire Chief Richard Bowers in a statement released by the county. The Department of Environmental Protection recommends only placing ashes out for collection with regular household trash if they have been thoroughly soaked with water in a metal ash bucket with a tight-fitting metal lid. Any container holding …

UPDATED: Snow In the Forecast Wednesday

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Montgomery County starting at noon on Wednesday, Feb. 8, but it cancelled the advisory in the afternoon.

Update (Feb. 8, 4:30 p.m.): The National Weather Service has cancelled this winter weather advisory. Although forecasters are still expecting light snowfall this evening, only about a half of an inch of snow will accumulate. Original post (Feb. 8, 10:15 a.m.): The springtime-like weather of Tuesday will no longer exist as snow is forecasted for Wednesday afternoon. The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Montgomery County, stating there was a 100-percent chance of precipitation. NWS Forecasters said the snow should arrive in the area by noon and it won't end until long after the evening rush hour—at 10 p.m. One to two inches of snow will accumulate, according to the forecasters, with a lighter snow from 11 a.m. to…

WSSC Digs In for Winter

The water provider for Montgomery and Prince George's counties replaces aging water mains in a race against time.

They hide quietly beneath your house, crisscrossing under neighborhoods, roads and buildings, just waiting to burst and give you a headache. More than 5,500 miles of Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission pipes are buried beneath Montgomery and Prince George's counties, and with winter settling in, officials are gearing up for breaks, leaks and bursts. Winter, WSSC spokesman Jim Neustadt said, is when underground water and sewer lines break or leak more frequently. The temperature of the river water varies, causing stress on the pipes, he said. That's why he was in a Gaithersburg neighborhood Tuesday morning with WSSC General Manager Jerry N. Johnson and other officials as work crews dug up and replaced a problematic water main. The work …

Winter Started Today?

Just because it got colder faster doesn't mean winter solstice jumped the gun too.

While the unusually frigid weeks leading up to today might have fooled some of us, winter didn't officially start until 12:00 a.m. this morning. Marked annually by the winter solstice, an astronomical event where the earth's axis tilts as far as it can away from the sun, the beginning of winter always falls either on the 22nd or, as it has this year, the 21st. Though a grim harbinger for the cold-averse among us, the winter solstice also ushers in an annual trend we non-nocturnals can appreciate: the days after it get longer. Today, is the shortest day of the year, meaning all days after will steadily increase in length until peaking on June 21, next year's summer solstice. From there days will shorten until the next winter solstice.    16…

Winterize Your House

A checklist of things to do to prepare your house for winter

I have always loved winter. Whenever snow was in the forecast, I along with my two children, put our pajamas on inside out. Apparently, the ritual is that you are supposed to put a spoon under your pillow as well. And don't try this magic when there is no prediction of snowfall, it doesn't work. By the time we hit the second major snow storm last winter and the ice dams had caused my bathroom floor to warp and my ceiling to leak, not to mention my shoveling-induced aching back, my love of winter was seriously challenged. This year I vow to be prepared! Here are some tips to help you ward off the major problems of frigid and snowy weather.  OUTSIDE   Gutters Clogged gutters cause ice dams and seepage into the house, so make sure that after …
