State Highway Administration Urges Drivers to Stay off Roads

If you need to drive, slow down, use caution, and leave extra distance between your car and the driver ahead of you.

The best advice for drivers today is to stay off the roads, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration. For those who need to drive, SHA is urging motorists to slow down, use caution and increase the distance between your car and the driver ahead of you. “Don’t be misled by the bare pavement you may see as you wake up this morning. Conditions will change rapidly and we’re urging drivers to stay off the roads and leave the driving to our crews,” SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters said in a news release. “Although crews are primarily treating roads with salt, we fully anticipate plowing roads as snow begins to accumulate.  If you encounter our crews, remember to leave plenty of following distance and never try to pass plows.” …

Winter Storm Warning Issued for Montgomery County

The warning goes into effect at midnight.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Montgomery County, in effect from midnight tonight through 3 a.m. Thursday. The storm that’s been dubbed the “snowquester” is expected to dump 4 to 8 inches of snow on Montgomery County, beginning Tuesday evening and tapering off Wednesday night. The Washington Post’s "Capital Weather Gang" blog is predicting higher snowfall accumulations in the northern and western portions of the county. Snow-covered roads are expected to make travel difficult, and the storm could also bring power outages.

Winter Storm May Affect Region This Weekend

Forecasters aren't sure whether there will be any significant snow—or just rain.

Much of the DC Metro region could be in for another dose of winter weather this weekend, depending on how an approaching storm shapes up. The National Weather Service warns that a system moving in from the southeast "will likely impact portions of the Mid-Atlantic Saturday and Saturday night." "At this stage, rain or snow is possible depending on the storm track," it adds. The latest forecast for the area calls for a mix of rain and snow starting Saturday morning, then switching over to just rain by early afternoon. Snow may slip back into the picture Saturday evening as temperatures drop again. Though the NWS expects minimal accumulation over the course of the day, AccuWeather puts potential snowfall totals for the Baltimore-Washington …

Treacherous Wintry Mix for Metro Area

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Montgomery and Prince George's counties until 1 p.m. today. The alert calls for a mix of freezing rain, sleet and rain, with possible accumulations of less than one inch of sleet and under a tenth of an inch of ice. Temperatures are expected to stay below freezing, which can cause treacherous road conditions. In a statement released by the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) administrator Melinda B. peters urges motorists to "keep their speeds down as lighter traffic can result in increased travel speeds," and "to exercise extreme caution today." Silver Spring resident Brian McCaw was out this morning in the wintry mix. "It was a little but unexpected," said McCaw…

WSSC Prepares for Winter Weather

As the weather chills, water main breaks become a significant problem for the agency.

Anyone who remembers the chaos that ensued after a massive water main burst under River Road in Bethesda in 2008, knows the unpredictability of aging water mains. Last year there were nearly 2,100 broken and leaking mains, with about 30 percent (647) happening in December. The average from 2000-2010 was 1,742 per year, according to WSCC officials. Winter, said WSSC spokesman Jim Neustadt, is when underground water and sewer lines break or leak more frequently. The temperature of the river water varies, causing stress on the pipes, he said. This year there may be more problems, with 25 percent of the 5,500 water mains in the WSSC system over 50 years old, according to a release by the agency. “We are in the midst of an aging infrastructure …
