The 10th annual Bethesda Fine Arts Festival will be held May 11 and 12 at Woodmont Triangle, with more than 20,000 expected to attend.
The Bethesda Fine Arts Festival will take place the weekend of May 11, with its 10th anniversary celebration featuring more than 100 artists from around the country. The festival, which is produced by the Bethesda Urban Partnership and the Bethesda Arts and Entertainment District, is slated to draw more than 20,000 attendees during the weekend. Last year, there were somewhere between 20,000 and 25,000 people on the streets of Bethesda partaking in the festival. The attending artists cover a wide variety of artistic mediums, such as ceramics, glass, printmaking and photography. The Art Walk still drew a crowd, especially at the “Tunnel Vision” exhibition at the Bethesda Metro Station.
Despite the questionable weather and occasional rain, Bethesda Art Walk still drew a crowd on April 12, particularly at the exhibition near the Bethesda Metro Station. “Tunnel Vision: Art Under the Avenue,” an exhibition featuring the work of 12 regional artists, lines the walls of the pedestrian tunnel that runs under Wisconsin Avenue. The exhibition was part of the Bethesda Art Walk this month. 12 Bethesda Youth Writing Contest winners have been selected from amongst 650 entries.
The 12 winners of the Bethesda Youth Writing Contest have been announced, and the student writers will read their work during the upcoming Bethesda Literary Festival. The winning writers, in grades Kindergarten through 8, were selected from a pool of 650 submissions from 25 Montgomery County schools. Students were prompted to write an essay based on the theme, "One Thing I Do Well." The contest was produced by the Bethesda Urban Partnership and sponsored by Washington Parent Magazine, where the winners will see their work published. Artists, submit your work to the regional juried visual art competition.
Calling all artists! April 1 is your deadline to submit an application for The Trawick Prize, a juried visual art competition established in 2003 by Bethesda community activist and philanthropist Carol Trawick. Prize money totaling $14,000 will be awarded to the winners, and the work of selected artists will be featured in September in a group exhibition at Bethesda's Gallery B. The deadline to enter is April 1. Notifications will be mailed April 26. Up to 10 finalists will be selected. Of those, the artist named best in show will be awarded with $10,000; $2,000 will go to the second-place winner, and $1,000 to the third-place winner. A young artist may be awarded $1,000. Six professional theater troupes will race against the clock Feb. 9 as they write, produce and perform original plays in 24 hours. The ninth annual speedy theater event is known as Bethesda's "Play in a Day," and it's produced by the Bethesda Urban Partnership and the Bethesda Arts & Entertainment District. Calling all writers! The Bethesda Urban Partnership and Bethesda Magazine are looking for entries for an essay and short story contest as a part of the 14th Annual Bethesda Literary Festival. Each year, the festival draws novelists, journalists, poets and children’s authors to downtown Bethesda. Check out a video attached to this story of NPR's Michele Norris speaking about her book "The Grace of Silence" at the 2011 festival. This year's event featured writers Thomas Friedman, Marvin and Deborah Kalb, Joby Warrick and Walter Isaacson. Jude Nagel, artist and former Montgomery Blair art teacher and department chair, died in 2011.
Gallery B will showcase the work of late artist and former Montgomery Blair art teacher Jude Nagel during a December exhibition. Nagel was a fixture in the Washington, DC area arts scene, and her paintings and mixed media have been shown at galleries including Target Gallery, Black Rock Center for the Arts, Torpedo Factory, Watergate Gallery and The Circle Gallery. Nagel was also affiliated with Washington's IFA gallery, according to a Bethesda Urban Partnership announcement, and exhibited and sold work through galleries in New York City and in the Southwest. Nagel died of melanoma in 2011 at age 73, according to an obituary published in The Washington Post. She was born in Logansport, Ind., and raised in Washington, graduating from …
