Thanks to a colder-than-usual March, the cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC, took longer than expected to bloom. Peak bloom dates were revised twice. This week's warm temperatures, however, seem to have done the trick, and the cherry blossoms were in full bloom by Tuesday. Peak bloom arrived in April for the 2013 Tidal Basin Cherry Blossom Festival.
The cherry blossoms were in peak bloom Tuesday as large crowds wandered around the Tidal Basin and National Mall, taking in their delicate pink and white splendor. The peak bloom is when 70 percent of the blossoms are open and the average peak bloom date is April 4. After several recalculations this year, the National Park Service determined that the peak bloom would fall April 6 through 8. NPS initially estimated a peak bloom would arrive March 26-30 and then changed that prediction to April 3 through 6 after a bout of cold weather. The 2013 Cherry Blossom Festival runs through April 14; the parade is scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 13. No work is scheduled for Metrorail tracks and stations this weekend, and Metrorail will open at 5 a.m. on Sunday for the Credit Union Cherry Blossom 10-Mile Run.
Metro takes a break from its rigorous weekend track work schedule during the cherry blossom season, according to a Metro news statement. This year, the break occurs on four consecutive weekends. The remaining two weekends are April 6 to 7 and April 13 to 14. "The only planned weekend work during that time will take place late Sunday evenings, when ridership is light," Metro reported. "While the work we do almost every weekend is necessary to get the system back to a steady state of safety and reliability, we are in a position where we can take a short break to let everyone enjoy the season," Metro General Manager and CEO Richard Sarles said in the statement. "The spring break will give people an opportunity to experience the type of …

The most recent prediction of when the pale pink blossoms will peak at the Tidal Basin is April 6 to 10, The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang reported.
We're still about a week away from the peak bloom time of the cherry blossom trees around the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC, The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang predicted on Tuesday afternoon, April 2. "The colder than average March and chilled start to April has slowed the emergence of [DC's] famed cherry blossoms. Peak bloom may not be achieved in the previously forecast April 3-7 window. Our revised window for peak bloom is April 6-10," The Post's Capital Weather Gang stated. Cherry blossom peak bloom times are not easy to predict.
