Voting in Bethesda: Need-to-Know Info

Looking to vote in Tuesday’s general election? Patch has you covered with what you need to know for Election Day.

Polls open at 7 a.m. for Tuesday's general election, but it may be better for your work schedule and your blood pressure to hit the election booths a little later.  Many voting precincts see the big turnout in the morning hours between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m., Marjorie Roher, of the Montgomery County Board of Elections, told Patch during the primaries. “We always encourage people if they can go later in the day to do so, because they might be waiting in a line,” Roher said. Montgomery County used to see an after-work/dinner rush to the polls but in recent elections that time block has seen a quieter turnout, Roher said. “Really we have a morning rush and then a few little peaks throughout the day.” Polls close Tuesday at 8 p.m. Looking to plan …

Many precincts reported heavy turnout in the morning with lines thinning out mid-day. Election judges at several Bethesda polling locations reported no after-work rush and minimal evening lines. At the Washington Waldorf School, "It was unbelievably heavy in the morning, but it started to peter out around 2 p.m.," said chief election judge Sue Schumacher. At a precinct voting at Pyle Middle School with 3,400 registered voters, 2,000 of those had voted as of 7 p.m. Tuesday, according chief election judge Carol Calhoun. With two precincts voting at Pyle, however, there was some confusion during the day…

Bongino Accuses Sobhani of Campaign Ethics Violation

The Republican candidate for Maryland's Senate says the Independent made unattributed robocalls disparaging him.

UPDATE: (5:22 p.m.)—The Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in Maryland is accusing the Independent of violating federal election law by sending out robocalls on Sunday night that didn't include a campaign disclaimer. The call, which was uploaded to Youtube by a staffer for Republican Dan Bongino, states that Rob Sobhani supports making English the country's official language. Bongino said this claim was false. Also, the caller claims Sobhani is the real conservative alternative to incumbent Democract Sen. Ben Cardin, another claim that Bongino disputes. "That's not only unethical, that's a clear criminal offense," Bongino said. "Unfortunately, you have the right to be dishonest in politics, but you don't have the right to be dishonest …

Obama-Romney Final Presidential Debate: Who Won?

The third presidential debate between President Obama and Mitt Romney focused on foreign policy. Who dominated? We want to know what Maryland thinks.

After President Obama and former Gov. Mitt Romney sparred aggressively last week, the candidates dug into foreign policy at Monday night's third and final presidential debate. News organizations cited instant polls that showed voters believed both candidates did well in a face-off that was less contentious than past debates this season but offered up a few verbal highlights. The two candidates had extensive exchanges on Iran and Syria, and the importance of the U.S.-Israel alliance. Obama responded to a charge by Romney that the Navy had fewer ships than it did in 1916. “We also have fewer horses and bayonets,” said Obama. Whom do you think won the debate? Tell us in comments. -- TV Channels Broadcasting Live: ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, CNN, …

SPEAK OUT: What Shade of Blue is Maryland?

And, where does Montgomery County fit in?

The campaign season brings out the best, the worst, the most passionate and sometimes the most vitriolic political debate. It also brings out candidates making stump speeches. In Maryland, those candidates are seldom running for president. A Republican presidential candidate hasn’t claimed Maryland since George H.W. Bush in 1988. It’s been a decade since Robert L. Ehrlich became the first Republican governor elected in Maryland since Spiro Agnew was elected 35 years earlier. The numbers tell a familiar tale: The roughly two-to-one voter registration advantage that Democrats hold over Republicans. The six-to-two Democrat-to-Republican advantage in congressional seats. And yet, when you read the comments on Patch sites, you hear them: …

Funny, we're listed anywhere from 6 to 9th in the nation for schools, while test scores have dropped 3 out of the last 5 years. We are listed as 39th as a business friendly state, so I really don't know where you pulled your number from. 5 of the top cities? where was that pulled, please tell me, was it for scenery or crabs? We certainly can throw money at the education problem with falling test …   more ›
