Make an American favorite: apple pandowdy.
Our early presidents enjoyed fruit by itself and in desserts. This was probably the case because fruit desserts are easy and quick to put together, and because they don’t require much additional sweetener. Desserts such as pandowdies, cobblers, slumps, crisps, grunts and Betties were all common, and were made using whatever fruit was available. Apple pandowdy was a favorite of several presidents, including George Washington, John Adams and John Quincy Adams. The charming name comes from how the cook pushes the smooth crust into the apple filling, making it look “dowdy.” This pandowdy has the added advantage of using in-season fruit and an all-American sweetener—maple syrup. Happy Presidents Day, Chevy Chase! Know what government offices are closed before you step out to visit them.
Good morning, Chevy Chase! It's Monday, Feb. 20, and here are five things to know today, Presidents Day 2012: 1.) Expect partly-cloudy skies, with high temperatures in the upper-40s, according to Weather.com. 2.) As it's Presidents Day today, many schools and offices will be closed, including all county offices, county libraries, county liquor stores, Montgomery County Public Schools and administrative offices and state offices and courts. Community centers will be open, although class schedules will be modified. Ride On buses will follow the modified holiday schedule, and Metrobus will follow the Saturday supplemental schedule. What you need to know about schedule changes for Presidents Day
In observance of Presidents Day, the following locations in the Chevy Chase area will be closed: The Friendship Heights Village Center will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The United States Postal Service will not be delivering mail due to the holiday. Ride On busses will be operating on a modified holiday schedule, including routes 1 and 11, which go through Chevy Chase areas. Some Ride On bus routes will be operating on a regular schedule. Metrorail will start at 5 a.m. However, the last passenger train on each rail line will leave 20 minutes earlier than usual. The system is also being worked on, as it was during the weekend.
