A shuttle bus connecting the Town of Chevy Chase with downtown Bethesda (including, possibly, Bethesda Row and the Bethesda Metro station) is under discussion, Bethesda Now reported. At the town's December council meeting, shuttle bus idea originator Chevy Chase At Home—an organization that helps senior citizens live at home with a little help from volunteers—"decided to develop potential shuttle routes through a committee before holding a public hearing sometime early next year," Bethesda Now added. The shuttle bus routes could cost the town between $89,000 and $118,000, depending on the hours during which the shuttle bus would be operational. Chevy Chase resident Eva frequently hops on board after she’s finished with her errands. Sometimes, she rides for up to six hours each day. Jan and Harriet ride up to the Village Center to play Scrabble every Thursday evening. These women, along with several other residents of the Village of Friendship Heights, take advantage of a unique, free shuttle bus that most neighborhoods don’t have the pleasure of using. Part of area residents’ tax dollars go to run a bus that operates seven days a week, since 1979. Eva, who lives in the North Park area of town, has been a resident for 20 years, since her husband passed away. The bus takes residents throughout Friendship Heights for free.
Need a hand with your heavy groceries? Want a ride to the metro in bad weather? Well, if you live in Friendship Heights, you’re in luck. Ever since 1979, the Village of Friendship Heights has provided a free shuttle bus for residents. The bus runs on weekdays from 6:40 a.m. until 9:52 p.m., and weekends from 8 a.m. until 7:22 p.m. Making a loop about every thirty minutes, the bus stops at numerous apartment complexes, offices, Whole Foods, Giant and the Village Center. Weekday mornings are considered the “Express Service,” bringing commuters to the metro faster by eliminating some stops.
