Wintry Weather in the Forecast for Montgomery County

No major snow is predicted, but some cold and wet precipitation is predicted to fall in Maryland over the next two days.

While no major snow event is forecast for Montgomery County this week, there is some wintry weather in our future. Rain, mixed with snow and sleet mainly after 1 a.m., is likely tonight, according to the National Weather Service. Accumulation of less than half an inch is expected. Lows of around 34 degrees are forecast. Friday’s weather is predicted to be rainy and foggy, with a high of 44 degrees. The weather will turn cooler and breezy, with winds increasing to 20 to 25 mph after midnight. NWS gives a 30 percent chance of snow overnight, again with little to no accumulation.

Treacherous Wintry Mix for Metro Area

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory.

  The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Montgomery and Prince George's counties until 1 p.m. today. The alert calls for a mix of freezing rain, sleet and rain, with possible accumulations of less than one inch of sleet and under a tenth of an inch of ice. Temperatures are expected to stay below freezing, which can cause treacherous road conditions. In a statement released by the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) administrator Melinda B. peters urges motorists to "keep their speeds down as lighter traffic can result in increased travel speeds," and "to exercise extreme caution today." Snow and Sleet Expected Overnight

A winter weather advisory is in effect through 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21.

It could get messy out there tonight (Friday, Jan. 20). The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Montgomery County until Saturday, Jan. 21, at 1 p.m. Temperatures are expected to be below freezing at the start of the precipatation, but will become warmer, which will cause a transition from snow to sleet and freezing rain, according to the alert.

Winter Advisory, Storm Watch in Effect

Ice and sleet are expected Tuesday and Wednesday.

Alert Montgomery released a winter weather advisory and winter storm watch for Montgomery County for the next 48 hours. A two-phase storm is expected to effect Montgomery County over the next 48 hours, according to the alert. "The first part of the storm will move through overnight tonight with light sleet and freezing rain," the alert stated. Ice and sleet are possible and the winter weather advisory is in effect from midnight Monday through 12 p.m. Tuesday, according to the alert. "After a short break in precipitation tomorrow, the second more significant part of the storm will move through Tuesday evening [through] Wednesday," the alert said. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory.

Brace yourself for some more winter weather, Chevy Chase. The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the area in effect from 10 p.m. Monday evening to noon Tuesday, Jan. 18. Snow, sleet and freezing rain are forecasted, with the freezing rain having the most significant impact. One inch or less of snow and sleet accumulation and one to two-tenths of an inch of ice accumulation is predicted. NWS forecasts a mix of snow and sleet will develop between 10 p.m. Monday to midnight with the precipitation changing to freezing rain between midnight and 3 a.m. and will continue into early Tuesday morning.
