Two clusters of nighttime thefts from autos were recently reported in West Bethesda and Cabin John neighborhoods, police said. Four of the incidents happened during the same time period, in the overnight hours between Feb. 27 and Feb. 28. A fifth theft was reported in early March. In a recent crime report, police said that all of the vehicles were unlocked, and loose items-- mostly clothing -- were stolen. View a map of the incidents above.

A Silver Spring man has been found guilty in a series of thefts from autos and fraud cases in Bethesda and Potomac, during which prosecutors say he stole more than $25,000, The Washington Post reports. Michael Bernard Dorsey, 47, has been convicted of 20 counts of thefts from vehicles and identity theft and fraud-related charges over the course of five trials, according to the report. He could face a maximum of more than 58 years in prison. Prosecutors said Dorsey took items from cars parked at locations including MacArthur Boulevard and the Potomac Tennis Club, stealing credit cards and property including a $1,000 Anya Hindmarch purse and Louis Vuitton handbag. Thieves stole items from cars parked at a Bethesda church and library last month, Montgomery County police reported in a recent crime summary. Two cars parked at the Bethesda United Church of Christ were broken into sometime between 9 a.m. and noon on Tuesday, Dec. 18, according to the summary. The same day, items were stolen from a car parked in the lot of the nearby Davis Library sometime between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., police reported. Force was used to enter all three of the cars, police said. An increasing number of thefts from autos are being reported in Bethesda and Chevy Chase, according to a recent Montgomery County police crime summary. Ten thefts from vehicles were reported the week of Dec. 3 to Dec. 12 in the Bethesda and Chevy Chase area, two of which happened at the Westfield Montgomery Mall, according to police. In one instance, an iPod was stolen from the trunk of a car in the 4400 block of Willard Avenue. Shortly before noon on Saturday, Dec. 8, thieves forced their way into a car and stole an iPad and charger at the Montgomery Mall. More robberies and assaults have been reported YTD in 2012 than this time last year, according to crime statistics provided by Montgomery County Police's second district commander.
More robberies and assaults have been reported in Mongomery County police's second district through the end of September in 2012 than at the same time last year, according to recent crime statistics. However, property crimes—including residential burglaries, car thefts and thefts from autos—are on the decline, according to statistics provided by second district Commander Capt. David Falcinelli. The second district includes Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and portions of southern Rockville and Kensington. During the first three quarters of 2012, 47 robberies have been reported in the second district. Second District Commander provides September year-to-date crime statistics in latest update.
Residential burglaries are down 40 percent and robberies are up 9 percent from last year in the Montgomery County police second district. The new crime statistics, which compare numbers from September 2012 with numbers from September 2011, were provided by Second District Commander Capt. David Falcinelli in a recent crime update. Robbery cases are a "priority" for investigators, Falcinelli wrote. The district includes Bethesda, Chevy Chase, and portions of Rockville and Kensington.
