Man Dies in Bethesda Construction Accident

A construction worker died after being pinned between equipment and a house.

A construction worker died Monday after getting stuck between an excavator and a house that morning, the Montgomery County Police department reported

The worker—John Joseph Whitney, 42, of Columbia—was pinned between the excavator and the house (in the 5700 block of Bent Branch Road, Bethesda) at about 8:35 a.m. as a construction crew worked outside the house, according to police.

Other construction workers were able to free him, but two were injured in the process. All three were taken to Suburban Hospital. The two workers who freed Whitney from the equipment were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police reported.

The Maryland Occupational Safety and Health Department is assisting in the investigation of Whitney's death.

ABC 7 News/WJLA published a photo of the scene of the accident on its website.
