Young American Killed in Protests in Egypt Reportedly From Chevy Chase

The State Department early Saturday identified an American killed in demonstrations in Egypt as a 21-year-old Montgomery County college student said to be from Chevy Chase, according to The Washington Post.

State Department officials confirmed that Andrew Pochter was killed in Alexandria, Egypt, on Friday during clashes between opponents and supporters of President Mohamed Mursi.

A family spokeswoman told The Post that Pochter's family was informed he was stabbed by a protester while observing the protest.

The Post said Pochter had gone to Alexandria for the summer to teach English to children and study the culture and language.

He was said to be a junior at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio.
