Ground Breaks for Norfolk Avenue High-Rise

Renderings unveiled for new high-rise in Bethesda.

A modern-style, high-rise, mixed-use building is planned for 7770 Norfolk Avenue, at the corner of Norfolk and Fairmont avenues.

Groundbreaking took place Thursday morning for the 17-story energy-efficient building, which will have 244 residential units—15 percent of them to be designated as "affordable," four levels of underground parking (including public parking) and a public pathway connecting Fairmont Avenue with the public parking garage on Woodmont Avenue. Frederick, MD, artist William Cochran will provide art for the pathway, according to The JBG Companies, CIM Group and Ross Development and Investment, which have partnered on the project.

The building is to be modern in design. "Crisp, white metal panels wrap the building's facade and are juxtaposed against minimalist glass and textured bronze panels, creating a stunning statement on the Woodmont Triangle streetscape," according to a news statement. The exterior design is by FXFOWLE Architects of New York City.

Interior architecture will be by Cecconi Simone of Toronto, and will join "modernism with detailed styling. An urban rooftop pool with outdoor living rooms and scenic lookouts from the upper stories add to the modern vibe that 7770 Norfolk is introducing to the Woodmont Triangle area," the statement added.

"JBG is a recognized leader in community building, and 7770 Norfolk is a prime example of how sustainable, transit-oriented development in areas where Montgomery County is encouraging growth can advance and enhance not just a neighborhood, but a broader area, Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett said.

"Woodmont Triangle is getting new hotel, office, residential and retail space that will benefit all of Bethesda" as well as Montgomery County, he added.
